Modern barbershop style with old school service
Research Phase
Before writing a single line of code, our research agent studied Barber King — their current website, social presence, reviews, team, and services. Here's what stood out.
Owner-operated by Mazin Dawood at 71 Grimshaw St, Greensborough — positioned near Greensborough Plaza and public transport, trading seven days a week with extended Thursday and Friday hours
Retro-themed barbershop specifically marketing to nervous young clients and families, with special rates for both children and seniors — an uncommon dual-demographic pricing approach for a barbershop
No website exists despite being listed across Bookwell, Facebook, Fresha, and Barber Near Me — the business runs entirely on directory presence and walk-in traffic from its high-visibility Grimshaw St location
Design Phase
Every design decision was intentional — informed by the research, not pulled from a template library.
Visual Direction
A 7-page site built around the retro barbershop identity, featuring a dedicated Fade Guide page and Standards page that reflect the shop's old-school craft positioning. Components include a testimonial carousel, image gallery, animated counters, and a floating CTA — all wrapped in warm tones that echo the 'retro ambience' the business promotes. A marquee element reinforces the classic barbershop aesthetic.
Design Rationale
Barber King trades on atmosphere and trust — the retro vibe and family-friendly welcome are its core differentiators. The design leans into this with visual warmth and dedicated content pages (Fade Guide, Standards) that demonstrate expertise beyond a simple price list, helping convert the walk-in demographic to online bookings via the existing Bookwell integration.
Build Phase
Site Architecture
// Next.js App Router
Methodology
Spark (research agent) scraped Barber King's current website, Google reviews, social media, and business listings. Every piece of real data — team names, service pricing, business hours, unique details — was extracted into a structured profile.
Based on the research, a bespoke design direction was created specifically for Barber King. No templates — the typography, color palette, layout patterns, and visual effects were all chosen to match this business's personality and industry.
Pixel (design agent) built the entire 7-page Next.js application from scratch — 8 custom components, real content from the research phase, App Router with proper routing, and production-grade code.
Sentinel (QA agent) verified the build compiles cleanly, checked for placeholder content, validated all routes render correctly, and confirmed the design is unique (not recycled from another demo).
Additional Notes
Research drew from 8 sources including Bookwell, Facebook, Barber Near Me, and Fresha directory listings. Data completeness rated medium — no official website exists, so core business details were assembled from third-party directories. Google Maps and Yellow Pages were inaccessible during research. No direct review quotes or service pricing were found publicly.
More from the experiment
This case study is part of the AI Web Lab — a 30-day experiment where AI agents build bespoke websites for real Melbourne businesses. Every site is researched, designed, and built from scratch by a team of five specialist AI agents. The full methodology, code, and results are documented transparently.
This study is being prepared for publication as part of a research paper on AI-assisted web development at scale.
